Weak on Offense, Poor on Defense, Diamonds Lose 7-1
Vallejo debuted a new starting pitcher who shut down the Diamonds, while three errors on the usually impeccable Jose Garcia opened the flood gates for the Admirals who won 7-1.
Melvin Morel (1-0) mowed through the Pittsburg batting order, not allowing a hit until the sixth inning. That hit – a smoking line drive off the bat of Javier Marticorena – slammed into Morel’s lower abdomen before he had any chance to catch it. Morel finished the sixth inning without giving up a run but did not pitch after that.
Travis Blakley (0-3) pitched seven innings for the Diamonds giving up seven runs, though only four were earned because of the defensive gaffes by Garcia.
Admiral centerfielder Tillman Pugh went 3 for 4 with a homerun to lead the Vallejo offense.
The two teams will meet again on Saturday at 5 p.m. at Winter Chevrolet Stadium. Fans are being asked to bring canned goods to donate to the Contra Costa/Solano Food Bank. Collection bins will be located at the entry gate. The Diamonds will donate half the ticket proceeds to the Food Bank.
