Strong Stirewalt effort overshadowed by Freese gem

San Rafael Pacifics starting pitcher Dakota Freese emulated his idol Sandy Koufax tonight by throwing a one-hit complete game shutout to mow down the visiting Pittsburg Diamonds 2-0.

Freese (1-0) struck out 14 batters, walked only three and was in complete command from beginning to end to earn his first decision of the year.

Diamonds starter Tyler Stirewalt (1-2) almost matched Freese’ brilliance but he gave up a two-run homer to Jake Taylor in the fourth inning and that was the difference.

The Diamonds have lost three games in a row. The final game of their series against the Pacifics will be Thursday night in San Rafael.
